TROPICO

March 3, 2015

Tropico is a new addition to Perth’s beachy, sun-drenched northern suburbs and is already proving to be a massive hit.

The café is located in North Beach, a coastal suburb about a half hour drive from Perth’s CBD. George Fowler*, Tropico’s Consultant Chef, describes the cafe as being a relaxed space, with a real “coastal Californian vibe”.

He’s not wrong. The cafe is a stone’s throw from the beach, and the space has a really airy, seaside feel to it.

Tropico 6The menu however, is most definitely a cut above standard beach side fare.

According to George, menu ingredients are sourced based on quality, farming practices and the distance the produce travels. Much of what they use is West Australian (i.e. Margaret River eggs, grass fed beef, organic bread) and all ingredients are chosen with these points in mind.

A latte + a mango, passion fruit and raspberry smoothie + a salted caramel thick shake

Speaking from experience, there are lots of great breakfast dishes on offer and it’s hard to choose what to order. Their menu is constantly evolving, with their most popular dishes at the moment being their avocado on sourdough with lemon curd and soft eggs (YUM) and their new kid on the block – the corn and salted ricotta fritters with smoked salmon, crème fraiche and lime.

Menu-wise, my recommendation would have to be the banana bread. I don’t have much of a sweet tooth, but it was AHHH-MAZING. Plus, it included a generous helping of honeycomb, meringue and banana on top – epic.

Tropico serve lunch and dinner as well and there’s even talk of Tropico Sunday Sessions (which would involve street food, live music and cocktails) kicking off at some point soon. Keep an eye on their social media for more info!
